This module invites you to view yoga and the students you teach through a trauma-informed lens. With this lens, we assume that the majority of individuals we greet on the mat are more likely than not to have a history of trauma. The word trauma has become appropriated through mainstream society as a way to describe everyday misfortunes. However, we understand that trauma is much more complex.
While this module is primarily about trauma-informed care, we cannot grasp the roots of this approach without a brief and honest history of yoga, specifically, Trauma-Sensitive Yoga. This module will guide you toward a broader understanding of how trauma shows itself through signs and symptoms - physiologically, mentally, and emotionally - with the help of “Overcoming Trauma Through Yoga: Reclaiming Your Body" by David Emerson. Together we will explore the policies, procedures, and practices of a trauma-informed yoga class and collaborate on building a trauma-informed classroom. When done with intention, trauma-informed yoga is highly effective for a variety of populations and can be altered to meet every body's needs. Through reading, discussion, praxis, and personal research, this mini-series invites you to engage with yourself and others with more care.
